Murder on Evergreen Lane

Introduction
Kansas Correctional Facility- year=2007

The prison Warden’s eyes bulged when he saw the release forms for his most dangerous inmate. Beads of sweat formed on the tip of his brow as he looked at the forms and looked at the prison guard that brought the forms in. A dramatic silence fell over the room as the Warden continued looking over the forms. Only the sounds of the Warden’s heavy breathing filled the room. The guard spoke up, breaking the silence.

“Sir, we got over twenty-thousand in bail money from a friend of inmate #5125. We have no choice but to release her.”

The Warden shot a worried glare in the guards direction.

“I know.”

The Warden got up and walked over to the window that overlooked the exercise yards.

“I don’t know if I can let her go. I mean, she killed a handful of people in a week. I don’t want anyone else getting hurt by her. She’s to dangerous!”

The guard watched as the warden turned to face him.

“What time does she leave?”

The guard had to think for a moment.

“In forty-two hours from now.”

The Warden closed his eyes and said a quick silent prayer. The warden opened his eyes and looked at the guard.

“Please leave. I need to some...alone time.”

“Yes sir.”

The guard walked over to the door and opened it only to turn his head in the wardens direction. The guard left. The Warden pulled the chair up to the window and sat thinking about what would happen when this inmate left the prison.

Robin paced back and forth in her cell. Her bunk mate, Helen, was asleep. The only noise in the cell was the trudging of feet and the soft silent snore of Helen. Robin made sure Helen was asleep. After making sure, Robin walked over to the cell door and looked to see if a guard was coming her way. When the coast was clear, Robin walked over to her bunk, and looked under her bed. Robin had a hershey’s chocolate bar which she stole from one of the other inmates. She lifted an old bed sheet and under the bed sheet, a half-eaten chocolate bar. Robin grabbed the chocolate bar and sat on her bed. As she unraveled the bar, she could hear Helen moan. She knew that Helen was waking up.

“Robin, what’s going on? And why do I smell chocolate?”

Robin didn’t talk for a second.

“Probably the guards are drinking or eating a lot of chocolate.”

Helen, still groggy from her nap, fell back asleep.

Robin started to hear Helen snore and continued eating her chocolate.

“That was close!” thought Robin. “If I got caught eating chocolate, I would be in tons of trouble.”

Right after Robin ate the first bite of the chocolate bar, she heard footsteps coming up the hall. She knew it was the guards.
